What is Online Baccarat?

Baccarat is one of the classic casino card games, favoured by high rollers and made famous by Ian Flemming's James Bond. It is a popular land-based casino game that has developed into different versions of the game that can also be played online in many baccarat online casino sites. Unlike Blackjack, it is a game of chance with very little strategy required. Players have 3 choices of player bet; Player win, Banker wins or a Tie. You are betting on a winning hand that comes from both the banker and the player.

Cards are dealt to the player hand and the banker hand. A winning hand is the hand closest to 9 points. Cards number 2 to 9 carry their face value. Number 10 and face cards have 0 value, while Ace’s have 1 point.

The sum of all cards at hand is the gamer's score; if it exceeds ten, the left number drops. In essence, the best value in an online baccarat game is 9. For example, if the players hand consists of a 6 and 9 value cards the total 5, if the players hand consists of a 8 and an ace, the total is 9. Depending on the hand totals, a third card may be dealt.

As a result, baccarat is among the casino games with the best odds of winning.

When is the Third Card Drawn?

In Baccarat casino games, if neither hand totals 8 or 9 (natural win), the dealer may draw an additional card on one or more hands, depending on its total.

Third card rules for the player

  • When playing baccarat the player's hand always goes first and dictates what happens to the banker's hand.
  • If the Player’s hand is a total of 8 or 9 points, it’s a natural win and no third card will be drawn.
  • The Player’s hand always stands on 6 or 7.
  • On any total from 0 to 5, the Player draws a third card – unless the Banker has 8 or 9 which is a natural win for the banker

Third card rules for the banker

  • When Banker’s first two cards total:
  • 0-1-2 the Bank draws a third card unless the player has a natural win (8 or 9)
  • 3: Bank draws if Player’s third card is 0 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 or 9.
  • Bank stands when the Player’s third card is 8.
  • 4: Bank draws if the Player’s third card is 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7.
  • Bank stands when the Player’s third card is 0 – 1 – 8 – 9.
  • 5: Bank draws if the Player’s third card is 4 – 5 – 6 – 7.
  • Bank stands when the Player’s third card is 0 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 8 – 9.
  • 6: Bank draws if the Player’s third card is 6 – 7.
  • Bank stands when the Player’s third card is 0 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 8 – 9.
  • 7: Stands.
  • 8 – 9: Natural Numbers – neither hand draws a third card.

Payouts

  • If a player bets on the player’s hand and wins, the casino will payout 1:1 (even money)
  • If a player bets on the banker's hand and wins, the casino takes a 5% commission of the 1:1 payout.
  • If a player bets on the outcome of the hand being a tie (Egalite) the casino will payout 8:1 or in some casinos 9:1

Although Baccarat sounds like quite a simple game to play, there are many variations to the game. Punto Banco is probably the most common form of Baccarat played at online casinos and can be played on a small table with 6 or 7 other players, or can be played on a large-format table where up to 14 players can sit.

There are also different rules too when a dealer will pull a card for the player's hand or the dealer's hand. For the player, it is wise to understand the different rules even though they do not get to pull the cards themselves. The dealer controls the game. Apart from table size and layout, other differences may include the number of decks of cards used in the game.

Baccarat Variants

Punto Banco

Punto Banco is the most common Baccarat variations, popular worldwide due to the game's low house edge and simplicity. Punto Banco evolved from the game baccarat as a card game played against the casino. The rules follow those of baccarat with slight changes on the drawing of cards depending on the result of the first two cards drawn for both the player and banker win to be possible. In land-based casino’s Punto Banco can be played both on a large table with up to 12 players or on a mini punto table with up to 6 players, in both games the rules are the same.

Chemin de Fer

Chemin de Fer is a baccarat variant that originated in France. The player acts as the bank and plays against other players rather than the casino. It happens on a large 14-seater table and is mostly reserved for Baccarat VIP gaming. Chemin de Fer is not a version of baccarat you can find at online casinos, as the live dealer baccarat version is usually Punto Banco or Mini.

Mini Baccarat

Mini Baccarat is a 7-player table game that gives the dealer the authority to manage the game. Despite its limited status, it can operate close to 200 hands per hour and is the most common among the Baccarat versions.

Squeeze Baccarat

Squeeze Baccarat has the same general rules as traditional baccarat except the players get a chance to squeeze their cards to reveal the value of the cards slowly. Many online casinos offer this baccarat game offering players special camera views and peel to reveal features to increase the excitement of the game, however, it can slow down the speed of the game.

House Edge

The casino house edge is the take-home amount if the player and the banker draws and fail to get the required minimums. The house (casino) has the upper hand in casino gaming since the probability of the gamers losing is high. However, each casino game has a house advantage degree, from which Baccarat has the lowest among online casino games.

Baccarat house advantage stands at 5% in commissions from winnings. It represents a 1.06% edge, which is still low compared to table and casino games.

The house edge for online baccarat using 6 decks of cards is as follows:

  • To Bet on the Player the house edge is 1.24 %
  • To bet on the Banker the house edge is 1.06 % ( due to the 5% commission)
  • To bet on the tie the house edge is 14.44%

Side Bets

When playing real money baccarat, side bets are often available to play as well as the player, banker and tie bets. Some of these bets are available when playing online baccarat.

Optional Pairs

  • Player Pair: The first two cards dealt to the Player make a pair. This is an even money payout 1:1
  • Banker Pair: The first two cards dealt to the Banker make a pair. The payout for this bet is 11:1
  • Perfect Pair: The first two cards dealt to the Player or Banker form a pair. The payout for this bet is 25:1.

EZ Baccarat

  • Dragon 7: If the banker’s hand is a three-card hand totalling 7 the side bet wins. The payout for this bet is 40:1
  • Panda 8: If the player’s hand is a three-card hand totalling 8 the side bet wins. The payout for this bet is 25:1.

Baccarat Betting Systems and Strategies

Compared to playing online blackjack, for example, baccarat strategy is quite simple as there are no hard decisions to make. It all depends on the third card rule. The value of the first two cards determines if a third card is drawn to add to the total.

For serious baccarat players understanding the third card rule is key to playing the game. With only 3 main choices of where to bet, playing online baccarat is quite simple, but what is the best baccarat betting strategy to use?

Martingale

Martingale is a classic betting system baccarat players use to propose betting outcomes. It uses a negative regression model, which urges gamers to double their bet if they lose and bet with the same amount if they win. The system guarantees stake returns, even if you lose an initial bet. However, the Martingale system only works in short baccarat betting sessions since it might lead to huge losses while chasing the initial stake.

Paroli

The Paroli system seeks to correct the excesses of the Martingale system. It works with a positive progression model, starting with a fixed amount and increases/retain the bet amount depending on the outcome. If the gamer loses, the stake amount remains the same. They only double the amount when they win.

The number of times one can continuously bet after winning varies. Some stop at 3 while others go in until they lose. Although playing continually may amount to losses, the marginal loss is significantly lower compared to the negative regression model. The Paroli system only works for Baccarat games if the gamer has a stake ceiling to control losses.

Labouchere

The labouchere model is a negative regression model that capitalises on multiple small wins instead of one big one. It spreads out the risk into numerous fronts, which might recoup losses over time. This system works for Baccarat games as the number of stakes gamers can make can salvage losses incurred over time.

Fibonacci

Fibonacci also applies to UK Baccarat games, but its influence does not improve the output prospects compared to the other betting systems. It borrows from the negative progression system, although its formula isn't aggressive. It follows a number sequence that increases per stake. However, improving the stake value regardless of a win or loss might lead to significant losses.

5 Tips for Playing Online Baccarat

Always bet on the banker

Betting on the banker is one of the best baccarat strategies. Even though the house takes a 5% commission on these bets, you stand the best chance of winning when you bet on the Banker.

Stay away from the Tie Bet and Side Bets

The tie bet is a rare hand with a house edge of 14.44% and side bets with big odds may look attractive but chances of winning on these bets is often a lot lower than the payout odds.

Understand a winning hand

Once the hands are played out, the winning hand is the one closest to a total of 9 points.

Check the number of decks being used

The number of decks being used differs from casino to casino and affects the house edge. In general 6 -8 decks are used. The lower the number of decks the less the edge of a banker bet.

Bet carefully

The secret to playing any casino game, either at a live casino or playing online, is to control your bankroll and the amount of money you place on single bets. Know how much you want to win and more importantly how much you can afford to lose.
