Brazil Faces Potential Online Betting Ban Just One Year After Launch

Brazil could dismantle its newly regulated online gambling sector, following the introduction of Bill PL-1808/2026. The legislation, submitted by PT deputy Pedro Uczai, seeks to overturn the framework established in January 2025.

If passed, the bill would ban all forms of online betting, including related advertising, sponsorships, and financial transactions. In effect, Brazil would return to its pre-regulation stance, undoing one of the most significant gambling policy shifts in its recent history.

Support for the proposed ban is growing within the governing party, with 68 members already backing the initiative. The proposal also follows comments from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who previously suggested that legalising online betting may have been a mistake.

A complete reversal of the current framework would face strong opposition, particularly from key stakeholders. Institutions such as Receita Federal, which supported the regulated rollout, are likely to resist such a move.

Sports organisations could also be heavily impacted. Sponsorship deals linked to betting operators would be at risk, potentially disrupting revenue streams across Brazilian football and beyond.
