Online casinos now account for 48.6% of the total gambling market, with their GGR totaling DKK 3.53 billion, up from DKK 3.1 billion the previous year. Slots are the dominant game type, comprising 77% of online casino revenue.

Strong Growth in Online Gambling and Betting Segments

While the online sector led growth, other segments also experienced modest increases. Betting revenue rose by 1.2%, reaching DKK 2.21 billion, while land-based casinos saw a 1.7% increase, totaling DKK 368 million. The only decline came from gaming machines outside of casinos, which saw a slight 1.2% decrease in GGR. The trend of online and mobile betting continued to dominate, with 77% of the market share coming from digital platforms, up from 61.41% in 2023.

Problem Gambling in Denmark on the Rise: New Data from 2024

Spillemyndigheden’s report also highlighted an increase in self-exclusion rates for problem gamblers, with the number of individuals self-excluded from gambling growing by 21% to 55,899 in 2024. The most common form of exclusion was permanent, accounting for nearly two-thirds of cases. Data indicated that the majority of self-excluded individuals were male, continuing a consistent trend. The 18-25 age group represented the largest demographic of self-excluded individuals, with many of them having started gambling before the age of 18. Additionally, data from the StopSpillet helpline revealed that a significant proportion of conversations were conducted with individuals’ family members and consultants, highlighting the ongoing need for support systems.
