GambleAware has launched new resources and a comprehensive report based on research showing that neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD or autism, face an elevated risk of gambling-related problems due to specific characteristics.
Increased Risk of Gambling Harm
Research indicates a complex link between neurodivergence and problematic gambling. Individuals with conditions such as ADHD or autism are shown to be more susceptible to gambling harm. Key neurodivergent characteristics, including impulsivity, hyperfocus, and a need for structured environments or stimulation, can contribute to the development of harmful gambling behaviours.
The charity's findings suggest that neurodivergent individuals may engage in gambling for various reasons, such as managing social isolation, establishing routines, or as a form of coping mechanism. GambleAware CEO Anna Hargrave commented on the findings, stating that characteristics such as "impulsivity, hyperfocus, social difficulties and a need for stimulation drive gambling behaviour and increase harms."
New Resources and Key Support Principles
To bridge the evidence gap and improve treatment effectiveness, GambleAware developed new resources, toolkits, and training materials. These have been designed specifically for therapists and practitioners working with clients affected by both gambling harm and neurodivergence. The resources were developed by IFF Research and Ara Recovery for All, in partnership with the University of Bristol.
The new report outlines six core principles intended to guide more effective support. These include: ensuring clarity in communications, promoting client autonomy, understanding diverse communication needs, considering sensory requirements, encouraging self-directed approaches and peer support networks, and providing comprehensive staff training in neurodiversity awareness.
Barriers to Seeking Help
A significant finding in the report is that neurodivergent people frequently face substantial barriers when attempting to access support services. These obstacles include limited awareness of available specialist treatment, alongside the impacts of stigma and a fear of judgement.
According to Ms Hargrave, "stigma, shame and lack of tailored support further isolate neurodivergent people and make it harder for them to seek help.β The new initiative aims to address these identified challenges by providing practitioners with the tailored knowledge necessary to support this vulnerable group effectively.
