Italy Intensifies Fight Against Illegal Gambling Operations

Italian authorities have intensified efforts to tackle illegal gambling, shutting down unlicensed venues and confiscating unlawful gaming machines in Reggio Calabria. The raids uncovered a fully operational illegal gambling den and another location hosting prohibited machines, highlighting ongoing challenges posed by black-market operators bypassing Italy’s regulated gaming framework.
Authorities Uncover Major Illegal Gambling Venue
Law enforcement agencies carried out a coordinated enforcement operation in Reggio Calabria, targeting suspected illegal gaming activity. The action involved both the Financial Police and the Customs and Monopolies Agency, who worked together to investigate and shut down unlawful operations.
The most serious violation was uncovered in the town of Bovalino. Officials discovered what appeared to be a fully functioning gambling shop operating entirely outside the legal framework. The venue was reportedly trading under the name of a company that had already ceased to exist.
Investigators also found that the operation lacked the necessary licence to provide gaming services in Italy, while failing to comply with local regulations on player protection and operational safety.
Links to Maltese-Licensed Operator Raise Concerns
During the investigation, authorities uncovered a connection between the illegal venue and a Maltese gaming licensee. This discovery has drawn particular attention from regulators, as it raises questions about how offshore-linked entities may be tied to unlicensed gambling activities within Italy.
Officials have not yet disclosed the full extent of the relationship. However, the finding underscores the ongoing challenges regulators face when tackling cross-border elements of the illegal gambling market.
Second Raid Targets Illegal Slot Machines
The crackdown also extended beyond Bovalino. A second operation in the commune of Condofuri resulted in the seizure of several illegal gambling machines located inside a private club.
Authorities confirmed that the machines were operating outside the country’s regulatory system. Individuals responsible for the equipment now face financial penalties that could reach up to €50,000, alongside the potential closure of the venue involved.
The suspects connected to both cases have been reported to the relevant authorities as investigations continue.
Italy Considers Stronger Measures Against Illegal iGaming
Italy is also exploring broader solutions to combat the rise of unlicensed online gambling platforms. Lawmakers have previously discussed a nationwide domain-blocking system designed to restrict access to illegal gambling websites.
The initiative was proposed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and would be implemented by the Customs and Monopolies Agency. Under the proposal, the regulator would rely on a technological system developed by SOGEI to automatically detect and filter websites operating without authorisation.
While many stakeholders support stronger measures to curb the black market, the plan has also sparked debate. Some critics warn that large-scale domain blocking could raise concerns about government overreach and internet regulation.
A Growing Battle Against the Black Market
Italy’s latest enforcement actions highlight the country’s determination to protect the regulated gambling sector from illegal competition. By targeting physical venues and exploring digital solutions, authorities aim to limit the influence of unlicensed operators that bypass consumer protection rules.
The ongoing crackdown sends a clear message: illegal gambling activity remains firmly in the crosshairs of Italian regulators. With investigations continuing and new tools under consideration, the fight against the black market is far from over.
