Top UK Gamblers Spend £745 a Month as Betting Activity Climbs

Gambling Spending and Transactions Continue to Rise

Nationwide reported a notable rise in gambling expenditure among its customers at the start of the year. In January alone, the overall value of gambling-related spending increased by 9% compared with the same period last year.

The number of individual gambling transactions also grew, climbing by 7% year on year. These figures indicate that both participation and financial commitment are trending upward as the sports calendar begins to intensify.

Survey data gathered from 2,000 UK gamblers paints an even clearer picture of spending habits. According to the findings, the top 10% of bettors are spending an average of £745 each month on gambling activities.

Major Sporting Events Expected to Drive Betting

With a packed schedule of global sporting competitions approaching, many gamblers anticipate increasing their activity during the year ahead. The research, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Nationwide, found that 68% of active bettors expect to place more wagers in 2026.

The men's FIFA World Cup stands out as the most influential event, with 59% of respondents saying it will encourage them to bet more frequently. European football is also expected to attract strong engagement, as the UEFA Champions League and its final were cited by 34% and 30% of gamblers respectively.

Horse racing remains another popular betting market, with Royal Ascot mentioned by 20% of respondents as a key event likely to influence their gambling activity.

Entertainment and Excitement Drive Gambling Habits

While major sporting events play an important role, the motivations behind gambling extend beyond the sports calendar. For many participants, betting remains primarily a form of entertainment.

The survey found that 53% of respondents gamble for enjoyment, while 46% cited the excitement or thrill associated with the chance of winning. However, the research also highlights less positive motivations. Around 18% of participants admitted that boredom was their main reason for gambling.

Financial pressure also emerged as a concern. Approximately 17% of respondents said they gamble in hopes of generating money to cover essential living costs, and 6% reported that gambling had negatively affected their standard of living.

Limited Awareness of Gambling Blocks on Bank Accounts

The report also revealed that many gamblers remain unaware of tools designed to help control spending. Around 19% of respondents did not know that banks and building societies often offer gambling blocks that can be applied directly to customer accounts.

Kathryn Townsend, Nationwide's head of customer vulnerability, stressed the importance of early intervention and stronger safeguards. With a year of high-profile sporting events ahead, she warned that some individuals may find themselves gambling more than they can comfortably afford.

Charities Highlight Growing Demand for Support

The figures have also raised concerns among organisations working in the responsible gambling sector. GamCare noted that gambling-related harm can often lead to wider personal challenges, including financial strain, mental health issues, and relationship difficulties.

The charity reported a significant increase in demand for support services. In January alone, referrals to the National Gambling Helpline rose by 48% compared with the previous year.

At the same time, broader industry and government data suggest that gambling participation remains widespread across Great Britain. Nearly half of adults reported taking part in some form of gambling during 2024.

Balancing Betting Growth with Responsible Gambling

The latest Nationwide data paints a complex picture of the UK gambling landscape. On one hand, betting continues to grow in popularity, particularly during years filled with major sporting events. On the other, the rising level of spending among the highest-tier gamblers and the growing demand for support services underline the importance of responsible gambling safeguards.

As the sporting calendar gathers momentum, the balance between entertainment and financial risk will remain a central issue for both regulators and industry stakeholders.
